INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES

·   Bucuti Beach Resort, Practicing for Success: As noted in the A.M. Aruba paper, each year, Bucuti Management and Staff undergo training to maintain their Emergency Plan and Procedure, to ensure the safety of guests and staff, should an emergency situation occur. Aruba’s Fire Department simulates a fire complete with ‘casualties,’ to allow management and staff to practice their skills in the most realistic environment. Every individual at the resort has a task to perform and their performance is tested for response time and effectiveness. After the simulation is complete, a review and assessment of Bucuti’s performance is evaluated by the fire department in order to identify areas for improvement.

·    Bay Gardens Hotel in St. Lucia Invests in the Local Youth: For the third consecutive year, the recently Benchmarked Green Globe 21 property has taken on the responsibility of training four secondary school students, with pay, during their summer holidays. The students are given exposure to the varied operational areas of the hotel through a rotation program where they work in the following departments: administration, kitchen, restaurant, accounts, and reservations. “We are proud to contribute to the development of our youth, because we believe that our human resources are a major factor to sustaining our industry,” said Bernice Justin, Bay Gardens Accounts Manager.

·    Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, Focusing on the Community:

In its on-going efforts to improve environmental and public health practices, and increase local employment opportunities, Hotel Mocking Bird Hill supports the local community by:

    1) providing  space in its gallery for local artists and craftspeople to display and sell their merchandise, 2)promoting local attractions, community-based organizations, and cultural events, 3) serving on the Port Antonio AIDS Committee, 4) Allowing children from the Shebian School to have their swimming lessons in the hotel’s pool, 5) In addition to the fruits and vegetables grown on-property the hotel purchases foods from local farmers and fishermen to create a menu that is truly local.

·    Playa Linda Optimizes their Certification. Why Not Optimize Yours?: Playa Linda Beach Resort has maximized the exposure of their GG21 status by printing the Certified logo on their company envelopes. This is a great way to demonstrate your business’s commitment to improved environmental performance and increase awareness of the GREEN GLOBE 21 program among customers, suppliers and the community.

·    3 Rivers Eco Lodge Supports the Local Community and the Environment:

3 Rivers Eco Lodge bought a washing machine for a local woman and set her up in her own laundry business. This woman now does all the laundry for the hotel using phosphate free detergent that they supply.  She also does any laundry for hotel guests. In addition, 3 Rivers also sponsors many local sports teams as well as a local musical group.

·    Sandals Ocho Rios Resort & Golf Club Strives to Reduce Solid and Liquid Wastes:

Sandals Ocho Rios understands that reducing wastes is both better for the environment as well as their bottom line. Currently the hotel implements the following procedures to ensure their negative environmental impacts are reduced: • food waste from the kitchens is donated to a local pig farmer. • Fruit and vegetable waste from the kitchen along with garden waste are placed in the resort’s composting facility to be reused as mulch in the gardens. • Office paper is shredded and donated to a local ceramics manufacturer to be used
for packaging. • Glass bottles are returned to suppliers. • Most supplies are purchased in bulk
containers. • The waste effluent is pumped to Grande Sport Villa and Golf Resort where it is processed in their Wastewater Treatment Plant and used to irrigate the grounds. • Used kitchen grease is collected by a recycling company and used to make soap.

·    Palm Island Resort Exemplifies How an Acquisition and Renovation Can Be Green:

When the property was purchased it was in porr environmental shape. The management decided to systematically change this by: creating thriving saltwater fish and bird preserves from mosquito-infested ponds, installing a high-grade sewage and water treatment systems to prevent direct discharge, and by installing an efficient, organic hydroponics greenhouse and a composting program to enrich the natural soil and provide for the restaurants.
