About Us
The Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable
Tourism (CAST), a non-profit
organization chartered in 1997,
undertakes collaborative environmental
activities within the hotel and tourism
sector, promotes the effective
management of natural resources and
provides access to expertise in
sustainable tourism practices; assisting
hotel and tourism operators in the
Caribbean region achieve the goals of
Agenda 21 for sustainable development.
CAST's Mission Statement::

enhance the practices of the
region’s hotel and tourism
operators by providing high
quality education and training
related to sustainable tourism;
promoting the industry’s efforts
and successes to the traveling
public and other stakeholders;
and serving as a vital link to
all stakeholders with
sustainable tourism interests in
the Caribbean region.”

managing operations e.g. EMS & certification
e.g. Green Globe 21,
Blue Flag and QTC. The CAST Performance and
Leadership Program (PLP) provides a
roadmap to improved performance;

Via publications, guides, manuals &
videos, awards, CAST website,
newsletters, meetings & conferences etc.

Who
are we?
Governing Council
CAST is
led by a Governing Council that meets
annually to review CAST programs and
approve the annual budget. Council
membership comes primarily from leaders
of Caribbean organizations but may
include some members who have a
significant vested interest in the
region, whilst not being a resident with
the Caribbean. See the column on the
left for the complete list of CAST's
governing council members.
Sir
Royston O. Hopkin KCMG – Chairman
Sir
Royston Oliver Hopkin received the title
of Knight Commander of the most
distinguished order of St. Michael and
St. George (KCMG) in 2005. He was
recognized for his contribution to the
hospitality and tourism sectors of
Grenada and the wider Caribbean Region
in a career spanning over 40 years of
service. This distinctive honor also
sets a precedent, as Sir Royston becomes
the first hotelier in the British
Commonwealth to receive the KCMG.
Sir Royston, began
his hotel career as a teenager with modest
duties in his family’s business, The Ross Point
Inn. He quickly grew to become the youngest
person, at age 20, to serve on the Grenada Board
of Tourism. By age 24 he was President of the
Grenada Hotel Association. His climb to the top
did not stop locally, but saw him assume the
positions of Director, Vice-President and
ultimately, President of the regional body, The
Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA). His drive
and ambition has made him one of the leading
hoteliers in the Caribbean and he currently owns
the prestigious AAA-Four Diamond rated Spice
Island Beach Resort and its sister property, The
Blue Horizons Garden Resort. His outstanding
achievements were recognized by his peers when
he was selected as “Caribbean Hotelier of the
Year” by the Caribbean Hotel Association in
1991.
Deirdre Shurland – Director
Deirdre is a national of Trinidad &
Tobago with over eighteen years
experience in environmental management
and institutional development. She has
served in management and team leadership
positions, completed many environmental
audits and environmental impact
assessments, designed property
environmental management systems,
undertaken institutional assessments and
developed parks and protected area
plans. She has also significant work
experience in the hotel and tourism
sector, infrastructure development
(ports, roads and bridges, airports,
utilities) and in the
industrial/manufacturing sector. She has
served on boards of directors and in
other professional societies. She has an
Honours degree from the University of
the West Indies in geology and a
Master's degree in physical oceanography
(Mona Campus, Jamaica); a Graduate
Diploma in Marine Affairs & Ocean
Management from Dalhousie University,
Canada and is a member of the American
Society for Quality (ASQ).
Jennifer
Dohrmann-Alpert – Program Manager
Jennifer
Dohrmann-Alpert joined the CAST family
in October 2003 as Program Manager.
Jennifer is responsible for the
organization and implementation of
CAST’s programs and events. Born in San
Francisco, California, Jennifer has
extensive experience in both hotel
operations and hotel management. She has
working experience overseas in London,
Mexico and Costa Rica. Jennifer received
a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and
International Business from Georgetown
University and a double Master’s in
Hospitality/Tourism Management and
Public Affairs from Cornell University.
TSA's
Technical Service
Affiliates are professional engineering,
environmental and hotel operations
specialists who provide services through
CAST to the Caribbean Hotel Industry.
These services include training on
facilities management, environmental
management, disaster preparedness, and
engineering and energy issues- as well
as operational environmental assessments
and environmental impact assessments for
new constructions, in-house preventative
maintenance design and on-going
technical services and engineering
project management. |
